Potty Training Your Baby

It is very important that you don't make your baby feel self-conscious or fearful during potty training. It can be very difficult to potty train your baby so you have to be patient above all else.

Make sure your baby is ready for potty training. They need to be able to let you know when they need to potty and they need to be able, physically to use the facilities.

Use positive encouragement. Forcing them to sit on the potty until they go will only lead to setbacks in your baby's potty training. If you force them, it will create negative thoughts about using the bathroom that may last a long time. You may even cause your baby to withhold letting you know they need to potty.

If there is a lot going on in your life, such as vacations, marriages, divorces, etc., then it may be a bad time to start your baby's potty training. Your routine should be as normal as possible while you take your baby through this process.

Don't let anyone tell you that your baby's potty training should take any specific amount of time. Every child is unique and while some may learn in three days, others may take as long as a year. Don't stress on this point or force them to learn faster than they can. Take even small progress as a positive sign and show your baby how proud you are of them when they do well.

Accidents will happen. It's normal. Don't make it out to be a big deal. Get them to help you clean up the mess and wait until next time to encourage them to use the potty. Overreacting to accidents will only lead to more accidents and again set back your baby's progress.

Make sure you dress your baby in clothes that are easy to manage. They may wait until it's almost too late to make it to the potty, then because of the clothes fail. Again, that can discourage them and set back your baby's progress. Nude is the ultimate way to let your baby run around while potty training. If you are uncomfortable with that, then make sure they have as few snaps, zipper, bows, or buttons to deal with. Clothing that just pulls up or down is the easiest type of clothing to dress your baby in while potty training.

For the little girls, make sure they wear two piece bathing suits for swimming so they won't have a harder time than little boys. Also, remember winter may not be the best time to potty train your baby. The need for extra clothing during winter will hamper your baby's efforts to use the potty.

Bed-wetting, or enuresis is not solved through potty training and is a separate issue altogether. Don't expect that as you complete potty training that bedwetting will also stop at the same time. Many children don't stop wetting the bed until they are 4 years old. Babies under 3 don't have the bladder control to stop this yet. Children that are sleeping don't have the mental capacity to know they need to wake up, go to the bathroom, and use the toilet.

Keep your baby's fears about potty training in mind. The loud flush of the toilet in a confined space might be frightening to your baby. If they slip and their bottom touches the water in the toilet, they can be traumatized to the point that you will have to stop potty training for awhile. Seeing something come out of them and then flushing down the toilet can even scare them. Remember their fears are real and their minds don't quite comprehend what is happening to them.

Another thing to consider is, your baby may not want to change certain things. They may feel secure in diapers. The fact that you have been changing their diaper and taking care of them may have them comfortable with that process and may make it difficult for them to begin taking care of themselves. This loss of intimacy is frightful to your baby. Your child may not become independent so easily. This is also normal. Make sure in the beginning that you spend time with them to be close and intimate with them after potty time so they don't miss the time you spent with them when they were wearing diapers and you took care of them.

Summer Fun With Baby - Great Scrapbooking Ideas

Summer is one of the best times to take photos and capture memories of your baby.

Babies experience a number of new things and tastes during their first summer and these moments are well worth the effort of creating a scrapbook.

In the months before your baby's first summer, make plans to take a lot of pictures and keep a calendar or notebook handy to write down special occasions and amusing events.

Some great ideas for a scrapbook revolving around your baby's first summer include photos of swimming or outdoor play, interaction between baby and siblings or pets, and pictures of facial expressions while eating a first snow cone or ice cream. Babies have a wonderful time throwing balls and chasing after the family pet.

Keep your camera within easy reach and make sure to bend over when taking photos so that you are on the same level as your baby.

Some of the best pictures to include in your summer with baby scrapbook are those that are taken while your child is unaware of your presence. Water toys and sprinklers are great fun for baby and the photos you can capture will make outstanding and funny additions to your scrapbook.

Family picnics and reunions are also great times to snap photos of your baby. Relatives and other children playing with your baby make great memories that can be preserved in your scrapbook.

Your baby's first summer is a magical time that should be remembered throughout the years. Keep your camera and notebook handy so you will have plenty of material to include in your scrapbook.

Healthy Breastfeeding Tips For You And Your Baby

We've all heard the debate. Breast Feeding vs Formula. But why do most people say breast feeding is the best for your baby? Because this natural mother's milk is genetically the best food for your baby. This is the way GOD designed for things to work.

Want a more scientific reason? Okay, for one, the complex fats that are abundant in human breastmilk are vital to brain development and may have an effect on your baby's intelligence as they grow older.

Breastfed babies are ten times less likely to be hospitalized with gastro-enteritis in the early months than babies who are fed formula.

Breastfed babies also gain immunities from a host of other infections.

Here are some terms you may not already know. "Foremilk" - the thinner milk that first comes from the breast when you begin feeding your baby. This is for quenching the baby's initial thirst. "Hindmilk" - is the milk that comes later during the feeding of your baby. The hindmilk is much more filling and contains all the nutrients your baby needs to stay healthy.

Breastfed babies rarely need other drinks and supplements, because their mother has already given them what nature intended for them to have and need.

What's in it for me as a Mom? There is nothing to compare the bonding and closeness with your baby that is caused by your choice to breastfeed. It is a great feeling to know that you are doing what is best for your baby.

Babies need to be close to their mothers. They need physical contact. Breastfeeding is one of the best types of physical contact you can have with your baby.

It's also a whole lot easier than bottle-feeding! No feeds to mix, no bottles to warm or sterilize. Your breastmilk is always available, already sterile, and already just the right temperature for your baby.

Here is a real favorite among all women who breastfeed. Many women lose weight more easily after the birth if they choose breastfeeding over bottle feeding.

Another big issue is that there is evidence that breastfeeding reduces your risk for breast cancer.

What if I am having problems breastfeeding? Either your pediatrician can help you or there are breastfeeding counselors you can find in your area or online that can help you with any problems you may have.

If you have sore nipples or your baby isn't getting enough milk, it may be your positioning. Your baby's mouth should cover all of the areola, especially the part just under the areola. Sucking on just the nipple will keep the baby from getting enough milk and will make your nipples very sore.

Can I give my baby a bottle at times and breastfeed at other times? It's not recommended. Bottle nipples are easier for the baby to suck on and they will obtain bad breastfeeding technique which in turn will cause them to be less hungry or not get enough milk from breastfeeding.

Homemade Baby Food

You may be thinking, "My baby is still just a tiny newborn - why would I be thinking about making baby food?" But, you will soon find that time flies and it's not long before your beautiful newborn is ready for real food.

When I was pregnant, if you had told me that I would be making my baby's food by hand one day, I would have laughed my head off! Never could I have predicted that I would be advocating making your own baby food. I was a career driven, professional woman who believed that Gerber was best doing those sorts of things.

But it really is so EASY to make your baby's food, and you save tons of money, and best of all, you know what goes into it! That is the key for me. How do you really know what goes into store-bought baby food? You must be very trusting, to just accept (and hope) that the "professionals" are doing what they're supposed to be doing, and taking all the precautions they are supposed to be taking.

Baby food is really not complicated; for the most part it is one fruit or vegetable or sometimes two. When you are cooking dinner, boil up a few extra carrots. When they are cooled, use one of those Braun hand blenders (they cost about $20) and blend up those five or ten carrots with some of the water that they were boiled in. THERE! You've just made baby food. And it took you about 45 seconds. And, you know those carrots are just carrots. Jars of baby food carrots that you buy are actually mostly water. There's a tiny bit of carrot mixed in, but they are whipped so much with so much water, that really they are hardly even nutritious by the time baby is eating them.

Now, you may be wondering what to do with those carrots. You spoon them into an ice cube tray. Each bit is about two ounces. Any time you want to give some to your baby, just pop one out and microwave it, or leave it in the fridge to thaw.

Other foods to cook for your baby include: Zucchini (and other) squash - wash and cut into small pieces. Boil or steam for about 10 minutes. Puree and freeze just like the carrot example. Potato - peel and cut into cubes. Boil and mash with some water. Green beans - scrub beans well and cut off both ends of the beans. Follow instructions for zucchini. Peas - Use frozen peas or fresh peas, not canned. Canned peas may have too much sodium. You can boil and then mash with a fork. Add water or breast milk to make a smooth consistency. Sweet potato - Pierce it with a fork and then microwave just like a potato, or cook in the oven for about an hour. These are so very nutritious for your baby! Apples - All babies like apples, don't they? Wash and peel two or three apples and then cut into smallish pieces. Boil or steam -- do not add any sugar or cinnamon! -- and then puree just like the carrots.

So there you have some easy ways to make homemade baby food for your baby. It really is very easy, and when you make big batches and freeze them, it's even easier. You always have fresh, healthy baby food on hand, that you know how was made and what went into it. No one will take better care of your baby than you will!

Keeping Your Baby Relaxed Throughout The Day

One of the greatest challenges for any new parent is getting their child to sleep throughout the night. This is very difficult at first, as the child has to make a transition from sleeping with his mother to sleeping on his own. Like anything else in life, this isn't something that happens instantly - it takes time for your child to learn how to do this. There are some things you can do, however, that will create a better environment for your baby to fall asleep in. While you ultimately can't control when or how your baby sleeps, you can, in many ways, stack the deck in your favor. In terms of baby sleep tips, a good one is making sure that your baby spends his daytime hours in a relaxed and peaceful state.

Going from a state of being awake to one of sleep is a big transition, and one that requires some time. Most of us are probably familiar with the fact that the more "awake" you are when you try to go to bed the longer it will take to fall asleep - that is, the wider the gap in the transition between being awake and asleep, the longer it will take to achieve sleep. The same is true, of course, for your baby.

It is important, therefore, to encourage restful and peaceful days for your child. Particularly in the time leading up to bed, you want create an extremely relaxed and stress-free environment for your baby. By doing so you will be helping to create a situation for your baby where the transition from wakefulness to sleep is as easy as possible. If your baby spends much of his day being held and rocked and kept otherwise peaceful, it's likely that this will carry though into the night, and he will fall asleep easily. If, on the other hand, your baby spends his day in stressful situations - if he is on his own a lot, for example, and has to cry for a while to be tended to - it's likely that this will carry over into the night as well, making it difficult for him to fall asleep. Although it may seem a little strange, babies are like adults in that a stressful day will make it difficult for them to sleep - just keep in mind that your baby's stresses are very different than yours, though no less valid in terms of a good night's rest.

Another thing that sometimes helps to keep your baby in a restful state is the use of a baby sling. Babies who spend a large part of their day being carried in a sling often sleep better then those who don't. Whether you use a sling or not, the general rule you should be trying to employ is to be with your baby throughout the day. Babies that spend a lot of time in the arms of their mothers are generally more relaxed and sleep better. Remember that when your baby is left on his own in his crib, it is often very stressful for him, and babies that spend their days like this often don't sleep well.

Buying Baby Clothes On The Web

Buying Baby Clothes Online

Today's parents have more options available to them when it comes to finding and purchasing clothes and other items for their babies than ever before. With the advent of the internet, shopping for baby clothes has never been easier as there are numerous online retailers that can provide almost anything a parent needs. What follows are some of the best web sites for buying baby clothes online.

Discount Baby Clothes

Not surprisingly, some of the best physical discount stores that carry baby clothes are also some of the best online retailers. When looking for baby duds at an acceptable price the kings online are Wal-Mart, Target, and Kmart. Each company offers direct sales from their web site, have pretty much everything you could need in terms of baby clothing and layette needs, and offer it all at prices that won't make you spit up your Isomil formula. Each offers clearance items and baby registry services as well.

Other good sites with slightly higher, but still mid-range, pricing belong to Old Navy and Land's End.

Designer Baby Clothes

If you are a parent that wants to dress little Jane or Brian with a bit more pizzazz and if you don't mind paying considerably more to do so then try E-Luxury, a site that offers the full line of Baby Dior products and the direct web sites of several other designers who deal in baby clothing.

Anne Geddes who recently launched a line of her own baby wear based on her famous photographs.has their own site as does Baby Phat If you're looking to shop for as much as possible under one electronic roof try Chic Baby Boutique, they carry most of the Mak the Yak and Baby Om clothing lines.

Let Your Fingers do the Walking

There are literally hundreds of other web sites out there that offer baby clothes at all price ranges and designed to meet all specifications. If you're interested in organically grown cotton, there's a site that specializes in baby clothing made from those fibers. If you want punk rock designs on your baby's T-shirts, there are sites that offer just that! There are sites that offer political slogans on baby sized clothing, "alternative' baby clothing, and sites for baby & toddler tuxedos and evening gowns. If you can imagine it, you can probably find it somewhere on the internet where there is someone just waiting to sell it to you.

Mommy & Baby: How Should Your Baby Sleep?

What can affect your baby s disposition and well-being more than the feeding she gets? Sleeping! The sleep your precious bundle gets will affect every part of her waking life, including how she eats, how she interacts, and how she learns. Additionally, how your baby sleeps deeply affects you, as mommy. A fatigued and weary mom simply cannot adequately meet her baby s needs, or anyone else s, for that matter.

Parent-Directed Feeding (PDF) directly ties in to sleeping patterns of your young baby. It provides consistency, routine, and an ability to predict with a tremendous amount of accuracy what s going on when your little one cries. Confidence as a mommy comes when you know what to expect. Mom is also able to get more rest when utilizing PDF, ultimately making her healthier and more able to meet her baby s and family s needs.

Expecting babies to sleep through the night is very realistic, achievable, and reasonable goal, however it almost never happens without parental guidance. Babies that are healthy & full term are typically able to sleep between 7-8 hours at a time during the night between 7-14 weeks of age. When a baby reaches this milestone is very individual, but typically by 3 months of age, a properly-nourished PDF baby is sleeping through the night.

There is an art form to encouraging your baby to develop healthy sleep patterns, and as I mentioned earlier, it is rooted in the feeding-philosophy you adhere to. Using a PDF flexible routine, you ll want to set up your baby s routine to look like this (and in the following order):

 Feeding time
 Wake time
 Nap time

When you establish this pattern, your baby s sleep patterns will become predictable in short-order. Do not confuse the last two and encourage your baby to fall asleep while eating; you ll set up a pattern that you won t be able to sustain and won t give your baby the adequate sleep she requires to grow and be healthy. Babies do know when they are sleepy, but they have no ability to establish this routine for themselves, and if left to their own abilities, they will not develop healthy sleep patterns.

Failure to establish continuous night-time sleep is not a result of breast- or bottle-feeding. Neither the composition of breast milk or formula nor the speed with which either are digested have any bearing on a baby s ability to establish healthy nighttime sleep patterns.

If nothing else, good nighttime sleep habits produce healthier, more intelligent children, and thus should be a priority for parents to establish in their children s lives.

What Should I Buy For Baby--An Experienced Mom's Advice

Baby's coming home soon - have you got what you need to take care of the little angel properly? You know you need footie pajamas and onesies, baby towels and bibs - but how many is enough? Having done this five times now - please hold the applause and gasps of shock - I consider myself a bit of an expert on bringing baby home to a prepared household. Most estimates of 'what you need for baby' are a wee bit off, in my opinion. Having brought baby home both with and without a handy washing machine, here's my recommendations for what the well-equipped baby should have at home before he leaves the hospital.

Layette: Four to six undershirts - the usual recommendation - is actually plenty. You'll find you use them far less than I did when my oldest was born - pre-Onesies days. Skip the tank tops, as cute as the little midge might look in one just like daddy's, and go straight for the lap-shoulder t-shirts. They slip on easily, and if you buy them a size or two too big, they'll be long enough to tuck into sweatpants or bottoms.

Sleeping gowns are underrated. They make a great second layer over onesies, and are cool, loose and comfortable for baby in the summer. If you're bringing home a summer baby, pick up at least 6 or 8 sleeping gowns. They're much more comfortable in the heat than stretchies.

You can never have enough onesies. Whether you use them as the bottom layer in winter outfitting or the only thing baby wears in the summer, you'll go through several a day. If you have a washer at home, you can get by with 6-8. Otherwise, pick up even more. An even dozen isn't really too many at all.

- Experienced mom's note: DO use them in the summer. They'll keep your baby cooler than being in a diaper alone because the cotton absorbs moisture and wicks it away from the skin.

Stretchies are the second handiest baby invention ever. Stick with 100% natural fabrics like stretch cotton or cotton terry for the summer. For the winter, fuzzy jammies should go OVER a pair of onesies rather than against the skin to prevent irritation. 6-8 stretchies should be enough for baby's first few months.

Pick up one or two sweaters or sweatshirts to keep baby warm in wintertime or on cooler spring/summer evenings.

Four to six pairs each of booties and socks should be plenty. Cotton stretchy ones will be far more comfortable for baby than nylon.

One special take-me-home outfit and a few cute everyday ones.

Supplies: Half a dozen baby washcloths are a must. They're far thinner than regular adult washcloths, and less likely to irritate baby's skin. I never used more than three or four hooded towels, but your mileage may vary. They're awfully handy for wrapping a baby up from head to toe after a bath, especially in a cool house.

Bibs are another of those things you just can't have enough of. Drool bibs are fine for tucking under baby's chin to keep drool and spit-up from staining clothing. You won't need the bigger bibs for feeding for a while, but pick up one or two to have on hand.

Receiving blankets make great all purpose you-name-its. They're the perfect size for swaddling baby under a crib blanket, tossing over your shoulder when you burp the munchkin - or for privacy while you nurse him. You'll use them as towel substitutes, to toss on the floor or on a changing station before you put the baby down, spread them over the stroller or baby seat in the sun - in other words, for just about everything. 6-12 certainly aren't too many. It's not like the baby will outgrow them - my toddlers used them as bath towels for years.

Even if you're using disposable diapers, pick up a dozen cloth diapers. They're simply the best burp rag ever made.

Two packages of disposable diapers (size newborn and size one) if you've decided to use disposables.

A Baby Is Born With Several Reflexes

A Baby's Reflexes..

A baby is born with certain reflexes to protect them during the first few weeks. These reflexes will disappear after a few weeks and be replaced with voluntary movement during baby's development.

Doctors will check these reflexes to ensure his central nervous system is working correctly.

Walking Reflex

If you hold baby in an upright position with his feet touching the floor, his legs will seem to be trying to walk. This reflex will last for about 3-4 weeks, and he won't actually walk until he is around 12 months.

Crawling Reflex

Place baby on his stomach and he will take up a crawling position with his bottom in the air and his legs bent. This lasts for about two months when he will then be able to lie flat.

Search Reflex

Touch baby's cheek with your finger or breast and he will turn towards the source and open his mouth in search of food. This reflex will last for about 12 weeks.

Grasp Reflex

Place your finger in the palm of baby's hand and he will grasp it. This involuntary movement will persist for about 3 months.

Sucking Reflex

Put your (clean) finger in baby's mouth and he will suck on it. This reflex ensures he will be able to feed.

Diving Reflex

If baby is placed in water - either during a water birth or in a swimming pool - his throat will close so that he does not swallow the water. This means that baby will not drown if born in water, and he will also be a natural swimmer. This reflex will last for about 2 months, or longer if you take him swimming.

Babinski's Reflex

Stroke the sole of baby's foot and his big toe will curl up and the other toes will spread out. This lasts for about two years.

Baby Clothes You Can Use All Year

Few things seem more important at a baby shower than duckies, monkeys and theme colors. Once you get the baby home though, the most important thing about baby clothes is how well they protect your baby. Depending on the time of year that your baby is born, and the type of climate you live in, there are a variety of concerns to take into consideration for your baby's very sensitive nature.

For summer babies, or babies in warm climates, overheating is not the only concern. A baby's skin is incredibly sensitive to light, especially with the increasingly less protective o-zone layer. Sunscreen is not the only necessity for baby's sensitive skin. Keeping a towel or blanket over the baby's carriage or bassinet during summer play is a great way to keep the sun from harming your baby. Umbrellas and pop up tents are also great for beach days. Make sure there is plenty of ventilation but little to no sun that way your baby won t get sunburned or have to squint at the bright sun rays.

For daily summer wear, onesies that are made of a lightweight cotton are a great alternative to pants and shirts. In addition to being comfortable, they will easily fit in a small bag or purse that you can bring along in extra in case of a spill or accident. Another bonus of your baby being born in the summer is that it will keep shoe costs down, since a baby in a stroller in seventy five to eighty degree weather does not really need to wear shoes! Keeping a blanket in the stroller is important, especially if you're in air conditioned buildings a lot, since babies are a lot more sensitive to the change in air temperature.

For winter wear, bundling babies in layers is a good way to combat the difference between heated buildings and the outside. Avoiding long stretches of being outside in colder temperatures is probably a good idea, but for short walks or trips between cars and buildings, warm bundling is vital. If you live in a climate that has a lot of snow, the danger of sun burn is even more prevalent than in the summer, since it attacks from all angles. Warm socks, mittens, and hats will do a good deal to keep most of the baby's body heat in. Buntings that button down the front are a great way to let the baby escape from the heat a little bit when you are inside without too much effort for you or discomfort for the baby.

Layers work in almost every weather. As any New Englander will tell you, the ability to put on a layer or take it off is the key to combating shifting climates. This is particularly important for your baby, who is much more sensitive than you to slight changes in temperature or outside conditions. So keeping an extra sweater around, or putting an onesie underneath warmer clothing is a great way to prepare for anything that Mother Nature has in store. She likes to keep new mothers on their toes!
